Garda needs 25 stitches after attack

A garda needed 25 stitches to his face and another sustained a suspected broken arm after they were attacked when responding to an incident in south Dublin yesterday.

Six people were arrested following the assault, in which a garda was struck in the face at a house at Redwood Lawn in Tallaght at about 4am.

Gardaí from Tallaght station had been responding to reports of a disturbance. When they entered the property, they were confronted and set upon by a number of people. They called for back-up and up to five units of the force responded.

Two gardaí required hospital treatment afterwards, with one receiving 25 stitches to a facial wound. He was discharged later yesterday. The second garda last night had his arm in a sling.

The six arrested, two women and four men, were questioned before being later released. A file is being prepared for the DPP.

Labour councillor Dermot Looney said Redwood was usually a “very nice, quiet estate”, and that he was surprised to hear of such an incident taking place there.
