Banks are set to ramp up the rate of home repossessions using new legislation which will give them more powers to seize properties.

Secretary general at the Department of Finance, John Moran, told an Oireachtas committee that repossession numbers here were unnaturally low compared to international levels.

Mr Moran said taxpayers could not continue to subsidise people living in accommodation beyond their means.
