Declan McCormack, 22, from Riverstown in Sligo and his 20-year-old front-seat passenger Eoin Kelly, an apprentice mechanic from Dromahair in Co Leitrim, were pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash just off the R284 Ballyfarnan to Sligo road at Sooey at approximately 11.40pm.
The 21-year-old backseat passenger suffered serious injuries but gardaí said they were not thought to be life-threatening. He was taken for treatment to Sligo General hospital. The two dead men were taken to the hospital’s morgue.
Riverstown Parish Priest Anthony Bernard O’Shea who was called to the accident site said: “It’s a sad scene to see two young men who lost their lives in such a way, and to think the gardaí had to go with that information to their families and to try to help them accept something as tragic and as awful as what happened.”

The weekend’s deaths bring to 37 the number of people killed on the country’s roads since the start of 2013.
