Warning after man approaches boy, 11
Gardaí are investigating a reported incident in Kenmare on Tuesday.
The boy was walking home from a friend’s house at 6.40pm when he was approached and offered sweets to try to persuade him to get into a van. He refused, ran home, and the matter was reported to the gardaí.
Kenmare councillor Patrick Connor Scarteen described the development as worrying, but also said there was no need for undue panic.
“Kenmare has very little crime and is a very safe place in which to bring up a child.”
He said the boy had dealt with the situation properly, which was a good reflection on the way he had been taught by his parents and teachers.
The man has been described as black and in his late 30s or early 40s.
The dark-coloured van had no windows on the side and had a ladder attached to the back of the vehicle on the passenger’s side.
