Four hurt as car nosedives into basement after crash

Four people, including two Garda officers, were hospitalised yesterday following a dramatic two-car collision in Limerick city centre.

Four hurt as car nosedives into basement after crash

One of the vehicles broke through railings and took a nosedive into the streetside basement of a Georgian building in the heart of the city shortly before rush hour.

Photos of the Renault Laguna standing on its nose were trending on social media all day yesterday.

The accident happened shortly after 7am when an off-duty female Garda and sergeant were travelling along Mallow St and their car was in collision with another vehicle at the junction with Catherine St.

The two female gardaí, who had just finished working the night shift at Roxboro Garda Station, were travelling in a silver Volkswagon Golf.

The other vehicle, a red Renault Laguna, driven by a male, careered over a footpath and broke through the railings of a nearby Georgian building before ending up in a nose-down position in the basement.

A woman was also travelling in this car and all four were brought to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital for treatment.

Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

They were all released from hospital later yesterday.

The office of the Garda Ombudsman Commission was notified of the collision, as is standard procedure when a member of the force, either on or off- duty, is involved in a road traffic accident.

A Garda spokesman confirmed that the Ombudsman’s office was satisfied to return the investigation to local gardaí.

Three units of the Limerick Fire Service spent an hour and a half at the scene.

*Gardaí at Roxboro are investigating and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 061 214340.
