Phone app will allow punters to run ID check on cabbies

People will be able to use a new smartphone app to run an ID check on taxi drivers before getting into a car.

And the government plans to hire more “taxi police” to enforce a raft of new regulations which are being introduced in parallel with tough new legislation designed to clean up the taxi industry.

Alan Kelly, the public transport minister, made the announcements in Cork yesterday.
