The Government is to increase the number of work permits it issues to non-nationals to work in the information technology sector due to a “significant shortage” of expertise.

Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton said changes are to be made to the employment permits system “shortly” to attract more applications for highly skilled employees.

He said it has been shown that there is a “significant shortage” of skilled employees in that sector. A spokesman for his department said there was also a “global shortage of skilled workers in the ICT sector”.
