People should continue to protest against our massive debt and the hardships it is causing, the leader of the trade union movement insisted after tens of thousands took to the streets.

Unions claim 110,000 took part in the six rallies on Saturday, although gardaí estimated 25,000 turned out in Dublin, rather than the 60,000 put forward by organisers.

However, there was agreement among protesters in the capital, and in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Sligo, and Waterford, that they strongly oppose the cuts to pay and services being imposed by the Government on families and workers.
