Heroin valued at €150k seized

Heroin with an estimated street value of €150,000 was seized on the northside of Cork City yesterday in what a source described as the biggest single heroin seizure in the county this year.

The drugs were recovered from waste ground near a city landmark — the water tower at Lower Kileens, Gurranabraher.

The seizure followed an extensive Garda surveillance operation that has been ongoing for a number of weeks after gardaí became suspicious of activity on waste land near the tower.

A sawn-off shotgun was also seized, along with a quantity of ammunition.

Three men, all Irish and local, two aged 26 and a third aged 36, were arrested and were being held last night under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at Mayfield and Bridewell Garda Stations. They can be held for up to seven days.

The seizure was part of an operation targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs in Cork City and was carried out by gardaí from the Divisional Drugs Unit, assisted by local district units attached to Anglesea Street Garda Station.

A Garda source said the estimated value was “subject to analysis”. The heroin will be sent to Garda HQ in Dublin.
