Low turnout cannot be blamed solely on the Saturday ballot

During the campaign, Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore warned that the future of Saturday voting hinged on the referendum turnout.

Now that the turnout has proved so miserable — just 33.49% — there will inevitably be a rush to judgment that Saturday voting is a folly that should be repeated.

However, while the turnout was disappointingly low, it may not be as simple as that.
