Woman hospitalised after being shot with air pistol

A 20-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after she was shot with a high-powered airpistol following a row on the northside of Cork City.

Woman hospitalised after being shot with air pistol

The woman had to have a pellet surgically removed after it embedded in her left thigh.

Gardaí believe that just seconds before the shooting, she had been involved in a dispute with another woman at Kilmore Road, Knocknaheeny.

When the victim felt a pain in her thigh “the row dissipated” and she made her way to a friend’s house where she saw the wound.

The woman then went to Mercy University Hospital where an X-ray revealed she had a pellet lodged in her thigh. She was later transferred to Cork University Hospital where she underwent surgery.

Gardaí believe the shooting happened at Kilmore Road sometime between 6.30pm and 7pm on Wednesday. They were not informed of the incident until several hours later.

In a follow-up operation, detectives and uniformed gardaí from Gurranabraher, assisted by armed members of the Regional Support Unit, searched a house in Kilmore Road.

Superintendent Con Cadogan, who is leading the investigation, said a gas-powered air pistol was recovered from the house shortly before 2am yesterday. No arrests were made at the scene and the weapon has been sent to Garda ballistics experts for analysis.

“These are much more powerful than ordinary air rifles. They are high-powered weapons that could actually seriously injure or kill people,” Supt Cadogan said.

Gardaí believe the other woman involved in the dispute was not the person who fired the air pistol and are looking for a third party, who may be a man.

They were also waiting yesterday to interview the injured woman.

Gardaí are continuing to carry out house-to-house inquiries in the Kilmore Road area and have appealed for witnesses to the shooting to contact them.

“We are looking to speak to anybody who was in the Kilmore Road area between 6.30pm and 7pm on Wednesday and who may have seen what happened,” Supt Cadogan said.
