Gardaí have again appealed to people not to keep large sums of cash in their homes following the theft of more than €100,000 from a pensioner.

However, thanks to a bit of luck and some good old-fashioned detective work, gardaí have recovered nearly all of the money.

A gang broke into a house of a man in his 70s in Kanturk, Co Cork, while he was away.

Gardaí believe the gang entered the house sometime between 2pm on Sunday and 10am on Monday.

Gardaí then got a break when they were called to a hotel in Cork City to deal with a public order incident involving three guests.

When Mayfield-based gardaí arrived at the Moran Silver Springs Hotel on Monday evening, they discovered a large sum of money stashed in a safe in the bedroom, which was occupied by partying guests.

It is believed gardaí recovered about €55,000 from the safe and soon linked it with the theft in Kanturk.

A short time later, they recovered €15,000 from a hedge near a bus stop close to the hotel.

Gardaí arrested three people at the scene.

Two men, aged 26 and 30, and a woman aged 27 were being detained yesterday under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

It is understood they have addresses in North Cork.

In a further development yesterday, gardaí recovered another €30,000 which they also believe was part of the stolen haul.

This money was recovered in Co Limerick.

Gardaí have issued several warnings in the past on this issue.

“People should never keep large sums of cash in their house,” said a spokes-man.

“This man was particularly lucky we were able to recover nearly all of it.”
