While yesterday’s game might not have been the thriller the fine attendance in Fraher Field was hoping for, there was plenty of discussion in the stands and terraces of Ken McGrath’s recent departure as a Waterford senior hurling selector — and of his likely replacement.

Flanagan in the frame to join Déise ticket

Informed sources in the South-east suggested yesterday that manager Michael Ryan may ask highly-regarded team trainer Pat Flanagan, inset, to step in as a selector, directly replacing McGrath.

Such a move would minimise disruption ahead of next season and Flanagan would bring a wealth of experience to his role.
