The Late Late Show host, who had broadcast his 2fm show from Cork, visited Scoil Aislinn on the Boreenmanna Rd afterwards.

He spent over an hour with pupils, making jigsaws and reading books with them, and chatting to parents and staff before officially opening a state-of-the-art multi-sensory room.

Thanks to fundraising and grant aid from the Department of Education, the former storage room now boasts fibre optic lighting, a padded floor, a ball pool, a projector disc which beams images on to the walls, and vibrating cushions.

Two staff members who had been in the Late Late Show audience briefed the broadcaster on the project some months ago and he promised to visit.

Principal Geraldine Prendeville said it was a huge day for all at the school.

“The room will help the children to relax. It creates a calm atmosphere and feeds their huge sensory needs around touch and pressure. It will ultimately help benefit their behaviour and well-being.”

Scoil Aislinn, formerly known as CABAS school, was established as an independent pilot-project school for children with autism and intellectual disability. The Cope Foundation took over patronage of the school in Feb 2011.

Some 30 staff provide education for 33 pupils with autism and highly complex needs.
