500,000 warned over septic tanks

Up to 500,000 septic tank owners and users of domestic waste water treatment schemes have been warned they face prosecution if they fail to register with their local authorities.

Grants to upgrade waste water systems for owners will depend on their household budget and will not be available, if at all, until at least mid-2013.

The threat of legal action and information about possible financial support is contained in a leaflet sent to up to 500,000 households nationwide.
