Killarney jarveys face legal action on licences
Two unlicensed operators were recently asked to desist from seeking business but refused to do so, according to the local town council.
Town clerk Micheal O’Leary confirmed the matter had been referred to the council’s legal department.
The disclosure comes amid concerns about horse dung reappearing on the streets of the town and in Killarney National Park.
Since 2010, jarveys in the park and the town have had to use dung catchers.
Irish Business Against Litter warned earlier this week that the town’s multi-million euro tourism industry would suffer if dung continued to be left on the streets.
Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism claimed a small minority of jarveys or were ignoring the regulations.
The town council has agreed to maintain a cap of 37 on the number of jarvey licences in the town.
National Parks and Wildlife Service deputy regional manager Pat Foley said most jarveys try hard to keep the roads clean.
