O’Connor backs Christmas album for mental health

The ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ hitmaker has consistently made pleas to those struggling with depression and thoughts of suicide to reach out for help.

The songs will appear on an album of Christmas songs to be released later this year, with all proceeds going to the Aware organisation, which fights depression on a nationwide basis.

She tweeted: “I had massive fun at RTÉ at the weekend recording two songs for the John Creedon show’s Christmas album for Aware.

“Massive kudos to RTÉ for the vibe. U rock. Christmas can be a tricky time for those suffering from depression. It’s gonna be a wicked album.”

Speaking about the recording, O’Connor said she was meant to record only one song, but in the end performed two. She said she worked on the songs with guitarist Danny O’Reilly of soft rock band The Coronas.

The songs she recorded were the Christmas carol ‘Once In Royal David’s City’ and ‘When A Child Is Born’, popularised by Johnny Mathis. The album will be released in November.

The Grammy-winning singer previously asked those feeling overcome by life’s struggles to reach out to her personally. She says she wants to use her voice to help remove the stigma many associate with depression and mood disorders.

Aware is a voluntary organisation that seeks to raise awareness and support for those dealing with issues such as depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety.

The Irish-based organisation utilises a variety of methods for providing help, including using social media networks for online support groups.

Details of the others artists featured on the charity album will be revealed in the coming weeks.
