Body recovered from lake after boat capsized

The remains of the drowned man were located after 8pm by teams that had been searching for the man, who was missing since Wednesday afternoon.

The dead man was originally from Limerick but had been living in Ogonnelloe, on the Clare side of the lake, with his wife and young children.

His family was on the shore when the discovery was made.

The man’s boat was seen in Dromineer on Wednesday afternoon, but found capsized and damaged on Thursday 4km north.

The 20ft Crownline power boat was spotted 15m from the shore at Youghal Bay on Thursday, which is 1km east of Garrykennedy, in Co Tipperary.

This empty boat triggered a widespread search of the lake.

The vessel was found to have sustained damage to its hull and propellers, described as being “consistent with damage whilst under way”.

A Coast Guard spokesman confirmed: “There is a long horizontal gash along the hull. The propellers were damaged and it looks like the boat hit rocks while moving.”

Following inquiries, gardaí established the identity of the boat’s owner, but were unable to make contact with him.

The boat was taken to Garrykennedy, where it was tied up safely. Garda divers searched the boat before it was removed from the water and taken away for a technical examination.

The Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter carried out detailed sweeps of the area on Thursday night and again yesterday, on two occasions.

The rescue services were joined by volunteers from Tipperary Civil Defence and a search and rescue team from Mountshannon, Co Clare.

Weather and current trends for the area over the past 48 hours were examined in an effort to establish how far the boat had drifted.

One local man said: “We’ve heard three different names mentioned here, and that’s a bit frightening. There were some relatives here and they were very upset so someone is fearing the worst.”
