Quinn Jr yet to take up training course

Seán Quinn Jr is yet to decide what training course to join, prison sources indicated yesterday.

He is understood to be spending a lot of his time in the recreation room, while the vast majority of the 115 other inmates do their daily duties.

Prison sources said Quinn had only been in the Mountjoy Training Unit since Saturday and would be given some time to decide. “He is strongly encouraged to take part,” said a prison source.

The training unit is for inmates who are coming to the end of their sentences, and aims to prepare them for return to the community. The unit, which is on the Mountjoy campus, provides inmates with a structured working day, with work and training in the morning and afternoon.

The training courses provided are welding, computers, laundry, kitchen, environmental waste management, painting, and industrial cleaning.

The recreation room consists of a television, board games, a pool table, and a table tennis table.

Quinn, who is serving a three-month sentence for contempt of court, also has access to the library, gym, and exercise yard.
