Rain will not quench spirits of Summer Show organisers

It’s fingers crossed today and tomorrow for organisers of one of the country’s oldest agriculture shows.

Rain will not quench spirits of Summer Show organisers

Poor weather forced the cancellation of Cork Summer Show last month.

However, organisers are hoping nature will be a little kinder this time around as a rescheduled limited programme of events are staged.

The showjumping events begin today and will continue tomorrow in the new showgrounds at Curraheen, Bishopstown.

The free event will include horse and pony shows, dog shows, and terrier racing.

Tomorrow’s showjumping schedule will include four national competitions, with a total prize pool of €35,000.

About 800 competitors will take part.

The event had to be cancelled after torrential rain and gale-force wind severely affected the show site, just off the main Cork-Macroom road.

It was the first time the event was cancelled in its 171-year history.

Despite the poor forecast for the weekend, vice-president of the Munster Agriculture Show Gerard Murphy said the show would definitely be going ahead.

“No matter what, we will definitely be going ahead with the show for the weekend.

“The forecast calls for light showers, but the grounds should have absorbed all the water from the week’s rain. Hopefully that will be all.”
