‘Step forward’ in resolving villages’ sewage problem

Hopes were raised at the weekend for a resolution to long-running concerns over sewage disposal for villages bordering a West Cork estuary.

Contracts were signed between Cork County Council and a Dublin company for the design stage of a waste water treatment centre for Courtmacsherry /Timoleague.

Local county councillor John O’Sullivan said: “The need for a proper waste water treatment plant has been high on the agenda for a long number of years.

“I am very hopeful that the contract signed with Nicholas O’Dwyer and Co for the design of a new plant will move the process a step closer.

“However, although this is a very welcome step, the pressure must be maintained on both local and central government to ensure the project is completed at the earliest date. I will not be found wanting in this regard.

Both villages border Courtmacsherry Harbour.

The Fine Gael councillor said waste water disposal had been the subject of a number of public meetings over many years.

Cllr O’Sullivan said a special resolution of Cork County Council ensured it was now a priority water services project.

“There has been a public outcry for its progression by the very active communities in Courtmacsherry and Timoleague. The contract signing is a significant forward step.”
