Bus knocks down elderly man outside city station

An elderly man was in a serious condition in hospital last night after he was knocked down by a bus outside Cork City’s main bus station yesterday.

It follows a fatal accident involving a female pedestrian who was crushed by a bus as she crossed the road in the same area late last year.

The victim of yesterday’s accident is a man in his early 80s who lives in the city.

He suffered serious leg injuries when he was struck by an out-of-service single-decker bus as it was turning from Anderson’s Quay in to the bus station to pick up passengers for the 1.50pm service to Ballinacurra.

The man came in contact with one of the vehicle’s wheels on the main road as he crossed the road at the same time. He was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

Gardaí sealed off the roads for several hours to conduct a full technical examination of the scene. They are also examining CCTV footage from the area.

Last October, a 66-year-old woman was crushed to death after she was struck by a bus as she crossed the road outside the bus station.

The woman was seen walking from Merchant’s Quay and was crossing the road towards the bus station when she was hit by a bus, which had just turned the corner.

It is understood that gardaí, Bus Éireann, and Cork City Council have had several discussions in the wake of the fatal accident about pedestrian and road safety measures as part of a major roads redesign in and around the bus station.
