Eurosceptic MEPs to lobby for a no vote
Members of the Europe of Freedom and Democracy Group (EFD) will travel here next month and claim the treaty will lead to permanent austerity and that a yes vote will even hit Ireland’s corporation tax.
The European parliament group campaigned for a no vote during Lisbon, the last EU treaty held in Ireland.
MEPs from strongly eurosceptic groups such as the UK Independence
Party (UKIP) and the True Finns, both working together under EFD, will be among at least six MEPS from five different countries travelling here.
Hermann Kelly, director of communications for EFD, confirmed the parliamentary group would be campaigning for a no vote on Irish soil.
“We will have various MEPs from different countries coming over in May. The private Franco-German bank debt does not belong to the Irish people. The nationalisation of the bank debt is also wrong. The treaty is a recipe for permanent austerity and control.”
Mr Kelly said the group would carry out a national leaflet drop to every Irish home and MEPs would take part in media interviews here.
Among those arriving here will be the deputy UKIP leader Paul Nuttall and True Finns MEP Sampo Terho, said Mr Kelly.
He said the group would claim that a yes vote would eventually lead to an “attack” on Ireland’s low corporation tax and was therefore “very dangerous” for employment linked to multinational companies here.
