Club helps with ‘the hard work of finding a job’
But the Cork Job Club said people must be prepared to put the work into finding the right job and to consider new career paths.
“Looking for a job is a job in itself. And it can be quite a lonely process,” centre coordinator Orla Murphy said.
“The Cork Job Club gives job-ready people professional advice and support. And it also gives them hope.
“You have to know where to look, how to apply, and you have to stand out from the crowd. You have to tailor your CV for every job you’re going for.
“We’ve seen a huge uptake in our service and there is so much competition for each job. But there are jobs out there.”
The club, which links with Fás and recruitment agencies, had dozens of job vacancies yesterday in retail and hospitality, as well as vacancies for a business manager, a sales consultant, and a financial consultant.
The new office, based in Penrose Wharf in Cork, was officially opened by Minister of State Kathleen Lynch yesterday.
Funded by the Department of Social Protection, the club moved from the city’s North Main Street to Penrose Wharf.
It runs a three-week programme from 9.30am to 1pm, Monday to Friday for between 10 and 15 participants. There is a month-long waiting list for places.
The course helps jobseekers draft standout CVs, cover letters and teaches interview techniques.
Participants are registered with Cork Job Club and, after the course, can continue to use the club’s free services, including computer and internet access and printing facilities.
