Pony contest storms ahead

A pony championship has been bucking the recession and its growing popularity is predicted to result in a big fillip for north Cork.

Pony contest storms ahead

Up to 2,500 adults and children, along with 500 ponies, are expected for the Irish Pony Club Minimus Championship in Mallow in June.

According to one of the organisers, Noel Fitzgerald, it is set to be the pony club’s largest: “Since the downturn, we have seen a massive surge in participation, which is something we are delighted with, but can’t explain.

“In total, we expect about 2,500 adults and children to come from around the country to the Duhallow area and we expect each family to spend a minimum of €500 each, so it is a major boost for the local economy.”

The championship takes place on the weekend of Jun 23/24 and Mr Fitzgerald anticipates all accommodation will be taken up. “I believe there is hardly a hotel room to be had in the area and, already, some hotels are booked out in Mallow and Charleville.

“Kildare Pony Club alone is sending 36 entries along and we have already identified 400 stables to accommodate the other ponies,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

The championship is a triathlon for U12s, though some can be as young as eight. It is contested by teams of four, who must ride, run and swim.

“This is a serious competition, but with a major element of fun. It is the first time the championship will take place in Cork and we are anticipating a great weekend of sport,” Mr Fitzgerald said.
