No romance please, we’re Irish

If your beau or belle is Irish, don’t be expecting them to wow you with a last-minute trip to Venice or Paris, as research shows they are the least likely to whisk their loved one away on a Valentine break.

No romance please, we’re Irish

The study shows how, out of all Europeans, the Irish are the least likely to jet off on a luxury break to celebrate the annual feast of love.

The Irish flounder at the bottom of the romantic barrel, spending only €160 on a Valentine’s excursion.

However, our nearest neighbours don’t spend much more on their dearest. The Brits splash out €173 while, the ever-sensible Germans spend a thrifty €183.

So if you’re all on your own-some this year, keep an eye out for any free and single Spanish as they’re most likely to splash the cash abroad in mid-February.

Lastminute.com research discovered that, on average, a Spanish Don Juan will spend €261, the debonair French €249 and the Casanova Italians will drop up to €210.

If you haven’t worked it out already, Irish and British men and women aren’t known for being impulsive either — unless it’s about nipping off down the pub.

According to the lastminute.com data, the two nations are the most likely to book their romantic break well in advance.

On average, the Irish plan their break 40 days in advance, the British 39 days in advance, while the Italians make bookings 26 days before their getaway.

Number one choice of destination for the Irish is London if it’s an overnight stay, while Dublin comes in at number two.

If we’re planning to head to continental Europe, our love affair with Barcelona burns on, followed by the Hungarian capital, Budapest, and the Dutch capital, Amsterdam.

Eva Bojtos of lastminute.com describes Irish couples as thrifty but organised.

“They spend the least compared to other Europeans but plan their trips well in advance,” she said.
