Designer apologises for calling singer ‘too fat’

Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has apologised for calling Adele “too fat” and claims he is the singer’s biggest fan.

Lagerfeld, head of the fashion house of Chanel, said this week that although Adele had a “divine voice”, she was “a little too fat”. After coming under fire for his comments, the designer has clarified his remarks in an interview with Metro New York and insisted they were taken out of context.

“I’d like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer,” he said. “Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article it changes the meaning of the thought.”

He went on to add: “I actually prefer Adele, she is my favourite singer and I am a great admirer of her. I lost over 30kg over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance.”

Lagerfeld also described Adele as a “beautiful girl” and said he was looking forward to hearing her next album.

Adele is set to make her live return at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles this weekend, her first performance since she went under the knife in November to have vocal chord microsurgery in order to stop recurrent bleeding from a benign polyp, and shelved all of her remaining live dates of 2011.

The singer yesterday opened up about her problems with her voice, revealing the illness “felt like something had popped” in her throat and claiming she used a voice-generating app on her phone to communicate.
