New figures show that more than 300,000 drivers have escaped having penalty points recorded on their licences in spite of being fined for penalty point motoring offences.

Statistics from the Road Safety Authority show that at the end of last December, 766,027 drivers had been fined for penalty point offences — one in every three drivers on the road.

However, the figures show that more than two out of every five drivers fined, or 302,894 motorists, had no penalty points recorded on their licence as they were holders of non-Irish driving licences.
