Sporting chance beckons in NY

WITH a new sporting season just around the corner, an initiative from Waterford Institute of Technology should play well with any students planning careers in sport.

Sporting chance beckons in NY

The New York GAA is to offer two WIT students the chance to spend a year as a club development officer in New York state as part of a pilot programme aimed at developing clubs in Westchester and Rockland counties.

The placements will offer an opportunity to gain work experience in their area of academic study in tandem with developing club structures and coaching education programmes within the NY GAA club structure.

Amongst the objectives is to assist in the delivery of a strategic development plan for New York GAA Minor Board and Gaelic 4 Girls Programmes 2011-2014.

A further objective is to promote gaelic games to new audiences in schools and colleges in the Westchester and Rockland areas, through after-school youth programmes and the development of GAA clubs and societies in local colleges.

Applicants must be studying in WIT or have graduated from WIT within the last year, have a full Irish drivers licence, and must meet the eligibility requirements for a J-1 Visa or the internship work programme.

Candidates should have a foundation level GAA coaching certification, relevant coaching and administrative experience in gaelic games, and have completed a child protection award.

Interested parties should submit a 2-3 page CV to WIT Campus Services by Friday next. Interviews will take place in early February.
