State to foot redundancy bill for Vita Cortex workers

WORKERS occupying a foam packaging manufacturing plant in Cork city will receive statutory redundancy from the state’s social insurance fund — if their employer does not pay.

More than 30 former workers at Vita Cortex have been staging a sit-in since December 17. They want a €1.2 million redundancy package — 2.9 weeks per year of service for each worker — which they believe their employer has the resources to pay.

NAMA has frozen assets of a sister company, including a €2.5m bank account Vita Cortex bosses said they wanted to use for payments.
