Escape story ends in cliffhanger

THE occupants of a Sligo-registered Hyundai car, which was discovered precariously balanced on the parapet of the 30ft tall Cronin’s bridge in Rockchapel, north Cork, had a lucky escape.

Escape story ends in cliffhanger

It is understood that the vehicle was discovered unoccupied by locals at approximately 8.30 this morning with the lights still on and the engine running.

Conditions in the area were precarious thanks to the sub-zero temperatures which had made the roads dangerously slippy with ice.

As the photograph shows, the occupants of the car could have sustained serious injury if the vehicle had fallen off the bridge. Both wheels on the driver’s side of the large people carrier are literally hanging over the long drop to the side of the river bank and freezing water beneath.

A few feet behind the car and below it is a chevroned sign which has been dislodged from the steep corner around which the car appears to have travelled before getting into difficulty.

Gardaí confirmed they had received no reports of any injuries from the accident.
