Bad breath and baby food on menu for stars
That is the advice from dietary experts who have produced a list of the five worst celebrity diets to avoid in the New Year.
Top of the dodgy diet list is the Dukan diet, believed to be followed by Carole Middleton, mother of British royal Kate, that experts have described as “confusing and rigid”.
Spokesman for the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute, Dr Daniel McCartney, said the Dukan diet’s protein-only approach could harm kidney function and bone health.
The British Dietetic Association (BDA) said there is absolutely no solid science behind the Dukan diet and advises against it.
The Dukan diet, also reportedly followed by actor Jennifer Lopez and super-model Gisele Bundchen has ugly side-effects — constipation and bad breath.
At number two is the alcorexia/drunkorexia diet, where food calories are ‘banked’ and then used on binge drinking.
The diet was described as “pure madness” by the BDA, which warned it could result in alcohol poisoning and even death.
Cliff Richard’s blood group diet is in third place. Other celebrity fans include singer and TV personality Cheryl Cole.
The BDA warns that the calorie-restricted diet could lead to significant deficiencies such as calcium and was not sustainable.
At number four is the raw food diet favoured by actors Demi Moore and Natalie Portman.
“This diet is time consuming, socially isolating and you’ll have an awful lot of chewing to do,” said the BDA.
It also warns that those using meat in the diet are at risk of food poisoning.
Number five is the baby food diet, favoured by singer Lady Gaga and actor Jennifer Aniston.
“The ga ga should be for babies only,” said the BDA which pointed out that the diet worked on portion control and, again, restricted calories.
“Chewing food is associated with feelings of fullness and satiety, so reach for an apple or a carrot rather than a jar,” it advises.
For people who want to lose weight, the best advice remains the same: eat less and exercise more. Actor and comedian Dawn French, whose weight dropped from 20 stone to 16 this year, said she avoided faddy diets and decided to eat less and walk more.
“I am eating healthily, taking care of myself and feeling very happy indeed,” she said recently.
So, you don’t need rocket science to lose weight, just maybe some rocket leaves.
