A nine year-old girl died last night after being struck by a car in wicklow.

The little girl, a pedestrian, was struck by the car at approximately 5.40pm on the N81 on the Baltinglass side of Blessington village.

She was rushed to naas general hospital but was pronounced a short time later.

Following the tragedy gardaí appealed for witnesses to contact blessington garda station on 045 857620.

Meanwhile, gardaí were last night contacting the family of a woman killed after being struck by a taxi on the outskirts of Cork city early yesterday.

In what was a double tragedy on Cork’s roads at the weekend, the 37-year-old woman, believed to be from the midlands, died just five hours after a road accident took the life of a young nurse in mallow.

The second tragedy occurred at Carr’s hill, douglas, at about 2.30am yesterday.

It is understood the woman was hit by a taxi whose driver immediately contacted emergency services. the victim, who was working in cork, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was removed to cork university hospital where a postmortem examination was to be conducted.

Gardaí appealed to anyone with information to contact togher garda station at 021-4947120.

On sunday night, Joanne Herlihy, 22, died in a two-car collision at 9.10pm at Gearanskagh, Mallow.

It is understood that Ms Herlihy, from Killabraher, Dromina, was returning alone from work in the south infirmary in cork when her car was in a collision with another vehicle carrying a 51-year-old woman and her three children. The collision occurred near the Cork racecourse on the Mallow-Killarney road. Ms Herlihy’s body was removed to cork university hospital where a postmortem was carried out yesterday morning.

The occupants of the other car, who included a 12-year-old boy and two girls aged 11 and 7, were taken to hospital for treatment. the family is believed to be from the Ballyfeard area in Cork.
