CORK’S city councillors last night shot down celebrity gardener Diarmuid Gavin’s request for a meeting with them about his €2.3 million Sky Garden.

Mr Gavin wrote to the 31 local politicians last week requesting their permission for him and his design team to meet them, and to explain their side of the controversial saga.

It followed months of controversy over the taxpayer-funded, Avatar-inspired garden, which won gold at the Chelsea Flower Show last May. It is now owned by the city council, and is in storage.
