Car registration plate change sought

THE motor industry representative body has called for a change to the current registration plate system as the sector faces into a fresh downturn following the ending of the scrappage system.

In its pre-budget submission, published yesterday, the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) said serious problems were caused by the registration plate system because of its seasonal nature.

The warning comes as new figures show that car sales fell by 52% in October compared to corresponding month in 2010.
