Businessman the target of bomb

GARDAÍ are investigating why a businessman was targeted with a pipebomb in affluent Dublin 4.

Businessman the target of bomb

The bomb, described by army experts as viable, was placed under a car outside the man’s house on the upmarket Eglinton Road in Donnybrook, on the city’s southside.

The man, who works in consultancy, received an anonymous phonecall at about midnight yesterday and was told there was a device under his car.

The man rang 999 and gardaí from Donnybrook Garda Station arrived within minutes.

The man was removed from his home and neighbouring houses were evacuated. Gardaí alerted the army bomb disposal team, which arrived at 1.25am.

Experts examined the device and carried out a threat assessment.

The disposal team’s first priority is public safety and, after that, the preservation of evidence. It determined the device could be made safe at the scene without having to conduct a controlled explosion.

The team removed it to barracks for further examination.

When the examination was complete the device was handed over to the Garda Technical Bureau, which will conduct further tests.

The bureau will also try and recover any fingerprints, fibre or DNA evidence that might have been on it.

The area was declared safe at 2.30am.

Detectives have interviewed the owner of the house to try and determine if anyone was in dispute with him, including anyone had did business with him or who did work for him.

It is the 40th viable device so far this year, compared to 21 in 2010 and 29 in 2009.
