120 on list for weight-loss surgery

MORE than 100 severely obese adults are on a waiting list for weight-loss surgery at a HSE clinic which only has the capacity to do about two a week.

There are just two publicly funded hospital weight management treatment services in operation: One at St Columcille’s hospital in Loughlinstown, Co Dublin, and the other at University Hospital Galway.

It is recommended that in an ideal model, there would be four such centres, each doing 100 surgeries a year. Two other planned hospital clinics, another in Dublin and one in Cork, have not yet opened.
