Man charged with murder

A MAN yesterday appeared at Limerick District Court in connection with the murder of retired Eircom worker, Martin Purcell.

Gerard Manning, aged 32, of 17 Upper Gerald Griffin Street, Limerick, is charged with the murder of Mr Purcell, aged 54, at Apartment 2, 44 Wickham Street, on dates between September 28 and September 30 inclusive.

Garda Vincent Brick gave evidence of charging Manning at Henry Street Garda Station at 11.10pm on October 3.

In reply to the charge, Manning said: “I never done it. I am sorry.”

Ted McCarthy, solicitor, was assigned to represent Manning under free legal aid.

Inspector Jerry Horan applied to have Manning remanded in custody until October 11 and Judge Eamon O’Brien remanded the accused in custody to appear via video link on that date.

Manning, wearing a dark navy hoodie, did not say anything during the hearing.
