SINN FÉIN’S presidential candidate Martin McGuinness has said he has an obligation to “heal wounds” inflicted by his actions but insisted his IRA past would not hinder his suitability for the job.

Mr McGuinness will withdraw from his role as the North’s Deputy First Minister today as he starts his campaign for the Áras.

The former IRA member said “times have changed” and he is now seen as “a peacemaker who can be trusted”.
