Taoiseach Enda Kenny moved to avoid a potentially embarrassing vote on the issue by taking the unusual step of not opposing the proposed law.

Fine Gael intends to kill the opposition Bill at a later stage, but are keen to avoid a divisive Dáil showdown on the highly emotive issue, which has been the source of growing tension between the Government parties in recent weeks.
