Rail network must improve

IARNRÓD Éireann needs to improve its journey times in order to compete with the improve road network which has made car and bus travel more attractive.

Chairman Phil Gaffney, said improvements in the country’s motorway system had created very serious competition for Iarnród Éireann.

He told the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport yesterday that Iarnród Éireann would need to reduce journey times, especially on its intercity routes, in order to win back customers, who are increasingly inclined to use the car or bus routes.
