Progress made in Lufthansa dispute

SIGNS of a potential breakthrough in a dispute between unions and a Dublin-based aircraft maintenance company have emerged following the intervention of the Labour Relations Commission (LRC).

Progress made in Lufthansa dispute

Lufthansa Technik Airmotive Ireland threatened to close its Rathcoole facility unless its 465 staff lifted an overtime ban they introduced in March.

The company claimed unions had been carrying out the action in pursuit of a 2.5% increase, sought under the last national wage agreement, which it said had not been recommended by the Labour Court in 2010.

The trade union UNITE said a set of proposals will be put to workers next week if ratified by the company on Monday.

The proposals were brokered at a LRC yesterday following intense talks between the management of Lufthansa Airmotive and UNITE, SIPTU and the TEEU, representing the employees.

“The talks today have put all sides back on an even keel,” said Willie Quigley of UNITE. “Negotiation on proposals to resolve the issues between workers and management had been progressing well and this week’s breakdown is now hopefully behind us.”

Meanwhile, redundancy terms for 130 workers set to lose their jobs at a healthcare giant in Co Waterford are set to be finalised within the next 30 days.

Management at GlaxoSmithKline in Dungarvan met with union representatives yesterday to discuss the proposal which will see 82 jobs lost in the next two years and another 48 gone before the end of 2014.
