Woman rescued after river plunge

A YOUNG woman was dramatically rescued from the River Lee yesterday by emergency services.

The woman, who is recovering in hospital, fell into the river close to the Mercy University Hospital shortly before 12pm.

A unit of the fire brigade and an ambulance attended the scene.

An amateur photographer took these dramatic pictures of the emergency services entering the water and helping the woman to safety.

John Luminella, an American living in Wexford, said he was shocked that this was a “real-life” rescue as he first thought it was a body being removed from the water.

“I was here for the day and I just happened to have the camera,” said Luminella.

“The woman is very lucky that they were able to make it to the scene so quickly.”

Gardaí are investigating the details of the incident.
