Charities to benefit from Tall Ships as jigsaws sail out the door
The charities, which include the Sacred Heart Centre on Waterford’s Lady Lane, will benefit from the sale by 40 volunteers of jigsaws featuring scenes from the city’s previous hosting of the race series in 2005.
The volunteers, from the Hasbro Ireland team in Waterford, sold more than €16,000 worth of the 200-piece jigsaws from a marquee on the North Quays and a temporary retail outlet on Michael Street.
Each location was open for 12 hours per day from last Thursday to Saturday.
A total of 5,000 jigsaws were manufactured, with four designs using images from Waterford’s Terry Murphy Media. Every euro raised from the jigsaw sales is being given directly to the selected charities.
Tall Ships Races chairman Des Whelan said it was “a great way” for local toy manufacturer Hasbro to get involved in the festival.
“Their jigsaws clearly captured the public imagination and the volunteers from their Waterford team were obviously very effective salespeople.
“We also had a small number of designated charities permitted to collect cash donations from those who attended during the Tall Ships visit so that there could be a very direct benefit to charities from this huge public gathering and the atmosphere it generated.”
Hasbro Ireland’s human resource manager John Lennon said the team was delighted to get involved.
“Even on such busy days, we had no shortage of volunteers to do a stint at the two locations from where we sold the specially-created jigsaws. Locals and visitors recognised that we were raising funds for good causes and there was a terrific buzz around while the Tall Ships were in port so we had no difficulty generating sales of the jigsaws which make a nice memento of some great times in Waterford.”
lA limited number of the special edition jigsaws are still available for sale from Hasbro Ireland on 051 331100.
