Killarney emblem ‘abused’ for trade

KILLARNEY’S iconic logo — red deer leaping over three diamond-shaped lakes embraced by the writing quill of its medieval university of Inisfallen — is being hijacked by private interests, according to the town’s incoming mayor.

Labour councillor Sean Counihan, due to be elected mayor tonight, said he will call on the council’s executive “to invoke the patent Killarney is supposed to have on its town logo”.

The emblem is “being used and abused” he said.

“It’s on key rings and mugs all over the town. We should take back the rights to see if we could make use of it for the benefit of the people of the town.” It’s understood legal advice is being sought and a report is due at full council in July.
