A grand plan nobody expected to come to fruition

BUSINESSMAN Richard Quirke unveiled his grand vision for what was quickly dubbed a “Las Vegas-style” development in October 2009 — not the most auspicious of times for the start of a €460 million investment in the middle of Co Tipperary.

A grand plan nobody expected to come to fruition

One year after the implosion of Lehman Brothers, which kickstarted the financial crisis, and a year after the Government’s bank guarantee, Mr Quirke unveiled a Nevada-style casino in a jurisdiction that does not allow Nevada-style casinos thanks to legislation dating back decades. And it would depend largely on the “discretionary” spend of Irish visitors and foreign tourists alike

Yet the man who has uttered little in public regarding his great plan, preferring to offer his reasoning through PR statements or through his main political backer, Michael Lowry, has stuck to his task and yesterday landed a major blow in his quest to see that vision become a reality.
