Baby died prior to surgery

Dublin City Coroner’s Court was told that Billy Anthony Murphy died during the anaesthetic procedure before an operation days before Christmas in 2009.

The baby, whose parents Mark and Michelle Murphy from Edenderry, Co Offaly, were in court died in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin on December 21, 2009.

He had suffered a number of very severe congenital anomalies from birth including Digeorge Syndrome and pulmonary atresia and was scheduled for surgery on December 18, 2009. However, this was postponed until December 21 due to a bed shortage.

The inquest heard Baby Billy had got into difficulties following induction of anaesthetic (the period between the administration of anaesthetic and loss of consciousness) and died of an asystolic cardiac arrest.

Recording a narrative verdict, Dublin City Coroner Dr Brian Farrell said the death was a “devastating loss for the family”.
