The new scholarships include full fees for the programme of choice and a stipend of €16,000 per annum for successful candidates.

The university is also accepting applications for 30 John and Pat Hume Research Scholarships for PhD students this year.

Since its launch in 2005, 164 students have successfully received the John and Pat Hume Scholarships funding.

There will also be an additional 20 bursaries available for taught masters programmes — one for every department in the university.

This brings NUI Maynooth’s investment in student research to over €2m on a yearly basis.

NUI Maynooth president Professor Tom Collins said it will further add to the country’s talent pool and boost our international reputation and competitiveness.

“We are extremely conscious of the challenges students and parents face in funding postgraduate study in this difficult period. At the same time, it has never been more important that we attract our best and brightest students into postgraduate research.

“This is a very real investment by the university in Ireland’s educational future and we expect it to pay rich dividends in the coming years,” he said.

Applicants for the Hume Scholarship and the Doctoral Teaching Scholarships for October 2011 must contact NUI Maynooth Department or Research Institute to discuss their suitability for a PhD programme.
