Man, 21, dies after hit-and-run

The 21-year-old was knocked down by a green Nissan Micra on Parnell Road shortly before 2am yesterday.

The car, with a 96-D registration, was abandoned at the scene. The driver fled the area on foot.

The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was taken to St James’s Hospital, which is less than 500 metres from where he was hit.

However he died yesterday afternoon despite efforts to save his life.

An 18-year-old man was later arrested in connection with the incident and he was being held at Sundrive Road Garda station for questioning.

He was held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. This means gardaí want to question him in relation to an offence that they believe would demand a prison sentence of at least five years.

Gardaí are urging other pedestrians or drivers who were in the area at the time to come forward to help with their investigation.

This area of Dublin would normally be quite busy in the early hours of a Friday morning, however the pubs had to close at midnight on account of licensing laws for Good Friday.

The road between Clogher Bridge and the Dolphin’s Barn intersection with Crumlin Road was closed yesterday to allow for a forensic examination.
