Lifeboat with capability to launch from a beach

A NEW RNLI jet-engine lifeboat will be able to manoeuvre rapidly through shallow waters and can be launched from a beach, while it is hoped that the self-righting, all-weather vessel will help to keep rescuers safe.

Using twin waterjets instead of conventional propellers, it is hoped that the new jets will reduce the risk of damage to the vessel during launch and recovery, or when intentionally beached.

The Shannon all-weather class lifeboat harnesses “cutting-edge technology to ensure that it will meet the demands of a 21st century rescue service”, according to the RNLI.
